The Alumni Association Scholarship program started back in 1978 by awarding three scholarships totaling $900. It was a start! Fast forward 30+ years: as of this year the program has awarded 905 scholarships totaling $1,674,000. The program is going strong, thanks to the loyal support of Gonzaga alumni who continue to give to the fund year after year. For the year just ended, 44 scholarships were awarded totaling $165,000.

Recipients must have a family member who graduated from Gonzaga (parent, grandparent, sibling), and must apply for the award. Recipients must also be a current Gonzaga undergraduate, carrying at least 12 credits per semester.  A committee of Alumni Association board members chooses recipients based upon their applications, which include an essay, list of community service activities, academic achievement, and financial need.

The top applicant is awarded the Leppek Award of $15,000, and the next most highly rated applicant receives the Schafer Family Award of $10,000. Additional scholarships of $5,000 and $2,500 are given based upon the same criteria until all funds are expended.
